T shirt design and cad cut vinyl

Submitted by Steve on Saturday, 1 November 20083 Comments

Advertees always try to find the best process for the designs we are given, for one off designs and sampling we are using the direct to garment printing more and more. Screen printing is always our first choice on larger orders, but every now  and then we find cad cut vinyl is the only process we can use. For large areas of bright colour and clean edges it is the only cost effective option on orders of less than 10 items. The thing we do not like about heat pressed vinyl is the amount of plastic involved in the process. Direct to garment printers are excellent in this respect, as there is virtually no waste, and require no screens. We are hopeful the next couple of years will see direct to garment machines produce this kind of design on a sweatshirt at a similar quality, and with the rapid advances to date we are pretty sure this will be the case.

Would you recommend one-off DTG prints for someone who wants to test out a design (for composition / seeing what shirt colour works best, not for testing print colours as such) before screenprinting it in batch?

A direct to garment print is not the same as a screened print, they have very different characteristics. The only real reason to produce a printed T shirt sample would be to assess ink colours and print quality, rather than composition, therefore I would not advise using a DTG print as a sample for what will ultimately be a screen print, but as I mentioned in the post, it is now a common request and the only option for some people running on a tight budget. The design in the above post would not have worked well at all as Direct to garment in my opinion.

Thanks for that information. I want to design at least one t shirt over xmas and will probably buy a batch of 10 (I’ve already spoken to Admin about costs) screenprinted tees as an experiment. It needs to be done, else I’ll never do it.
