Spring clean and mesh tensions.

Space is always an issue for a busy screen printing shop, the more space you have the better. It is also essential to use your space efficiently. So with this in mind we have finally started the mammoth task of dismantling the older part of the advertees screen library being kept in adjacent barn. The older part of the library is made up of wooden screen frames, some of  which have not been touched for over ten years having moved on to Alumunium stretch and glued frames, and now Newman roller frames. So we have started the job of dismantling over 500 wooden frames, the frames will be used to run a couple wood-burning stoves.

Curious to know what kind of mesh tensions were achieved in the good old days, we put the Newton metre on a wooden screen printing frame, and it did not even register, we finally found one with a reading of 7 Newtons! Shown below next to our Newton Screen reading a healthy 30+.

So now we have potential for making good use of our adjacent barn, although a little building work is required when the clean up is finished, this is much needed new space to grow into.

Being a keen screen printer myself who runs a print shop in Osaka and having ordered my first set of newman Roller Frames this week I would like to know if you guys only use Newman roller mesh or as well other mesh brands for the roller frames?
I bet you guys wonder as well why you have waited for so long until you have made the switch to roller frames.
Something I ask myself on a daily bases.

We have been using a swiss brand up to now, but currently waiting on the arrival of some Newman Mesh, and will more than likely be posting on the differences we find to our present mesh. It is more expensive and customs seem to want to make importing it as troublesome as possible, but we are hoping it is worth the wait. More open area and higher tensions are almost certainly going to improve print speeds and coverage.
